A (Somewhat) Brief Word About My iPhone Obsession

Just a couple of days following my prior post that described my frustration with my old Razr, I took a leap and bought an iPhone 3G. First impression? The iPhone is the bee's knees. In fact, by day 2 I was hooked.

Transitioning from my antiquated phone to the more advanced one took some time, but I finally got the hang of things. I totally appreciate the touchscreen and easy interface, but most of all I love the options that the iPhone applications bring. Installing TwitterFon and Facebook first were my top priorities. Soon after I added Pandora to satisfy my music requirements, followed shortly thereafter by the Weather Channel app and USA Today because I like being in the know. Shazam is handy for those moments when a great song comes on the radio, and I want to know who sings it so I can buy it on iTunes later.

My newest app obsession is Lose It!, a free weight loss tool application. With it, I am able to log my exercise and calories burned along with my caloric intake by meal. Furthermore, it allows me to track my weight loss and gives me a preview of when I could potentially reach my goal weight based on my eating and exercise regimen. It's definitely my favorite app at this point in time!

So back to my general affinity for my iPhone: it's my alarm, my appointment keeper, my note-taker, my weatherman, my web connection, my portable entertainment (It even distracted me for an extended period of time during the Superbowl!). You get the picture. I don't know how I've gone this long without it!

The Great Phone Debate

My phone should have died today. Like my car, my Motorola Razr is another possession of mine that is ready to be put to pasture, but I just can't let it go. It is still working after all, and provides me a wireless line of communication in its most basic form - and truthfully, that's really all I need.

Earlier, I was under the impression that the battery was completely exhausted of energy, and even a recharge couldn't save it. I almost resigned to the idea that it was time to buy a new phone. Why I deny myself a shiny new phone is beyond the comprehension of those around me. My friends tease that my the Razr is a technological relic that must be traded in for a brand-spankin new iPhone. Upon hearing the news that my aged phone had met its alleged demise, they were ecstatic that I would finally join their ranks. When I alerted them to the fact that the old phone's death was a false alarm, they became set on sabotaging it.

Friends and others of concern, I realize that the iPhone is a fun gadget. In fact it is the phone that features everything. But in all honestly, I don't need to be any more connected to you all than I already am now. All the fancy-schmancy stuff the iPhone provides are excess...luxuries that I don't have a need for right now.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'm getting an iPhone, dammit.

Cool Gadgets That Make You Look Not So Cool

I just read an article on MSNBC.com entitled "Gadgets that make you look like a jerk." Being a person whose friends are into the newest innovative gizmos, my curiosity was piqued.

The Crackberry, er, I mean Blackberry was the first mentioned. The phone is pretty cool, however, I think its reputation is attributed to the obnoxious users that are attached to them. My 7-year old nephew told my mom that he wants a Blackberry for Christmas. Perplexed as to why a child of his age would want such a grown-up toy, my mom asked her grandson for a reason. His answer: a kid in his class has a Blackberry. I feel a sense of responsibility to stop douchebaggery in the 2nd grade. Therefore, I will proceed to tell my nephew that his classmate is a jerk and that he should expect to receive Guitar Hero 2 for Christmas.

Another gadget that I agree with on this list is the Bluetooth. I remember a guy wearing his at our annual holiday party, and I was distracted by the blue blinking light. I also recall thinking that the Bluetooth isn't exactly the right accessory for party attire. Mind you, the Bluetooth is perfect in the car or in the office, but it's not necessary anywhere else. One of my gal pals went on a date with a handsome man who had so much potential, until he showed up at dinner with a Bluetooth on his ear and didn't think for a second that he should take it off. To this day, she still ignores periodic phone calls from him...knowing that he's likely using the Bluetooth to make the call.
